Turmeric contains strong antioxidant active substances, the most important being curcumin (curcumin). Antioxidants fight free radicals that damage cell membranes and affect cellular DNA, even leading to cell destruction altogether. Antioxidants can reduce or even prevent damage from free radicals.
In addition, curcuma lowers the level of two enzymes that lead to inflammation and also prevents blood clots forming risk of infarction or vascular attack. It acts at a multi-path molecular level by blocking a molecule called NF-kB that activates the genes involved in inflammatory processes and does not have the side effects that most of the conventional commercial anti-inflammatory drugs have.
Curcuma is rich in iron and can therefore be very beneficial when administered to anemias.
It is also very effective in treating a large number of gastrointestinal disorders such as indigestion, ulcer, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome. Turmeric can stimulate gallbladder activity, and the ball produced by it stimulates digestion. In addition, the liver uses the ball to remove toxins from the body. The bile revitalizes hepatic cells that break down harmful compounds, turmeric being used to relieve liver and digestive disorders.
